I don’t know about you, but the weather here in Nashville finally feels like spring! Springtime honestly just makes me want to get outside and do some of my favorite activities. Garage sales, barn sales, and antique shows are so good this time of year. You can pretty much find me at one of these every weekend in the spring. One question I get asked all the time is where my home decor comes from? It is safe to say that about 85% of my home decor was found on a weekend pickin trip. I have so many favorite items that I have found over the years, but one that stands out is a long chippy shutter that I picked up at a barn sale. When I bought it, I honestly had no ideas what I was going to do with it. I rarely know where something is going until I get it home. This shutter was no exception. I instantly loved how much character it added to my decor.
1. In a Gallery Wall
The first idea I had was to mix it into a wall gallery with other vintage finds. I decided to put it in my entryway because the walls were super tall and this space could handle larger and taller pieces. I combined it with an old window, a repurposed headboard made into a chalkboard, and a new mirror. This was really my very first attempt ever to create a gallery wall, and I loved how it turned out. You can also see how I use old windows in my home HERE.
If you have an old shutter laying around, try mixing it with other new and old pieces to create a fun gallery wall!
2. As a Table Runner
I know, I’m super weird sometimes. I was decorating my kitchen with some spring touches and needed a table runner for my table. A fun idea came to me to use my favorite chippy shutter as a runner to see what it looked like, and surprisingly, I loved it! It added texture to the space, and I loved the pop of white it added to my table. I love thinking outside of the box and this was a fun example of that.
I have been asked if it bothered me to take it on and off when we ate and honestly, it didn’t, but you could always use this idea in a dining room or an outdoor space that doesn’t get used as much as a kitchen breakfast nook.
3. Make a Table With It
So, this last idea is my favorite because it is currently how I am using my shutter in my home. Last spring, I decided to change things us and sell my old console table . My plan was to get THIS ONE from World Market. In the meantime, I was playing around with this space and thought it would be fun to use the shutter as a table top. I thought about adding legs to it but decided to try some old crates that I had laying around.
Yes guys, I have old crates just laying around….hahaha!!
I added them to the bottom, and this DIY console table was the result.
This table is my favorite for so many reasons. I am so in love with the shutter being the table top because if just adds so much character and works perfectly with my style. Honestly, I don’t see myself changing this table out anytime soon because it truly is one of my favorite pieces in my home.
I think it’s safe to say that I got my money’s worth out of this old chippy shutter. Can you believe I only paid around $25 for it? SCORE!! When you are out and about of a junkin trip and see something that you love, don’t hesitate to pick it up even if you have no clue what you are going to do with it. I promise, you will figure it out!!
Well friends, I hope you guys liked my ideas for this shutter. I would love to hear what you have done with your shutter. Feel free to let me know and tell me which idea you liked best. Have a great day and thanks for stopping by!!
